Unit Summaries

The units described below have been grouped together in their normal combinations. They are designed to fit particular degree course requirements and the background knowledge of the students. Each unit has a dedicated area on this website. This area provides a detailed description of the content of the unit as well as links to all of the available electronic resources. Follow the link in the menu above or in the box below to access the unit area.

To decide which units you should choose, go to the 'Which Units?' page and consult the First Year Chemistry Team. The following combinations are available:

CHEM1001 & CHEM1002

The aim of these units of study is to provide those students whose chemistry background is weak or non-existent with a good grounding in fundamental chemical principles. Students with a HSC Chemistry mark of 50 or less, together with those who have done no previous study in Chemistry, should enrol in these units of study.

There is no prerequisite or assumed knowledge for entry into CHEM1001. However, students who have not undertaken a HSc Chemistry course are strongly advised to attend the Chemistry Bridging course.

All students who pass CHEM1002 and wish to enrol in Intermediate Chemistry units of study must pass a short supplementary course in the Summer Vacation.

The table below lists the number of students who sat the examination in these units in the last few years.

CHEM1101 & CHEM1102

These are the Junior Chemistry units of study in which the majority of students enrol. CHEM1101 is built on a satisfactory knowledge of the HSc Chemistry course.

Students who are unsure of their future and who wish to retain as many options as possible should do CHEM1101 and CHEM1102 or CHEM1901 and CHEM1902. A pass in CHEM1102 is required for entry into Intermediate Chemistry units of study.

The table below lists the number of students who sat the examination in these units in the last few years.

CHEM1108 & CHEM1109

These units are only available to students on the BSc (Nutrition), BSc (Molecular Biotechnology), BSc (Molecular Biology & Genetics) and Bachelor of Medical Science degrees. These units provide the basis of understanding fundamental chemical processes and structures at an advanced level, with particular emphasis on how this applies to the life sciences.

Students on these degree programs who have not studied Chemistry at HSC level should enrol in CHEM1001 & CHEM1002.

The table below lists the number of students who sat the examination in these units in the last few years.

CHEM1405

This is a special one semester unit of study for students doing the Batchelor of Veterinary Science degree.

Students who have not undertaken an HSC Chemistry course are strongly advised to attend the Chemistry Bridging Course.

The table below lists the number of students who sat the examination in this unit in the last few years.

CHEM1611 & CHEM1611

These two units of study are for Pharmacy students and lead to second year Pharmacy.

Students who have not undertaken an HSC Chemistry course are strongly advised to attend the Chemistry Bridging Course.

The table below lists the number of students who sat the examination in these units in the last few years.

CHEM1901 & CHEM1902

The Advanced units of study are designed specificallyy for those students with a very good background in Chemistry.

The minimum requirement for entry to CHEM1901 is a UAI of 96.4 as well a HSC Chemistry mark of over 80. Studentds in this category are expected to do CHEM1901 & CHEM1902 rather than CHEM1101 & CHEM1102.

Any student who successfully completes CHEM1902 is eligible for entry into Intermediate Chemistrty units of study.

The table below lists the number of students who sat the examination in these units in the last few years.

CHEM1903 & CHEM1904

The Special Studies Program is designed for the truly exceptional Chemistry student and entry is by invitation only.

The minimum entry requirement for entry to CHEM1903 is a UAI of 98.7 and a HSC Chemistry mark of over 90. Entry to CHEM1904 is restricted to students who obtain a distinction grade in CHEM1903.

Students enrolled in CHEM1903 & CHEM1904 attend the CHEM1901 & CHEM1902 lectures. The laboratory course for the Special Studies Program is supervised by various staff members of the School and has a strong emphasis on self learning and, where appropriate, on learning by problem solveing
