Merit Grades

The common result grades awarded in First Year Chemistry units are:

Grade Description Mark Range (%)
HD High Distinction 85-100
D Distinction 75-84
CR Credit 65-74
P Pass 50-64
F Fail 0-49
AF Absent Fail Usually idicates non-attendance at labs and / or failure to attend the examination
INC Incomplete Usually indicates non-attendance or an incomplete lab programme and an othewise satisfactory performance..

(The concessional pass 'PCON' is no longer used.)

The distribution of merit grades is governed by university policy which limits the number of merit grades that can be awarded in all first year units. These are based on the number of students who gain a Pass or better:
% HD - 3%, % HD + D - 14%, % HD + D + CR - 42%
where HD = 'Higher Distinction', D = 'Distinction' and CR = 'Credit'
