Computers and First Year Chemistry

There are many Chemistry 1 resources on-line. These do not replace lectures but aim to support your learning in chemistry. All of the University Access Centres provide free access to the Chemistry web applications via the University intranet.

You may also access all the Chemistry material from a home computer if you have internet access. For technical advice about computers and about USYD eLearning (sometimes called "WebCT"), contact the University's IT student support help desk on 9351 6000.

Unit Area

Each first year Chemistry unit of study has an associated area on the website providing links to all of the associated available electronic resources, including the syllabus, unit structure, assessment and administration information and links to all of the relevent teaching resources. You should regularly visit the area for the unit you are currently studying and we recommend that you bookmark it for easy access. Links to all of the unit areas are available under the 'Unit Areas' menu at the top of the page or on the unit summary page.

Self help problems, past exam papers and answers and lecture notes are available from the resource page for your unit.

WebCT

In addition, all First Year Chemistry units have a resource site hosted by USYD eLearning (WebCT). To access the site click on the USYD eLearning link when in MyUni and you will be taken to your online learning site. You will be asked for a Username and Password; these will be the Unikey (Extro account) Username and Password that you were sent with your confirmation of enrolment. Once you have entered the appropriate Username and Password you will enter the online area for all your units of study.

Self help problems, past exam papers and answers and lecture notes are available from the resource page for your Chemistry unit.

On-line Laboratory Pre-Work

Each laboratory experiment (labelled E1, E2…. in the Laboratory Handbook) has some "pre-work" associated with it. This provides background information to the theory of the experiment and has questions designed to test your understanding of the text. You must log on and go through the pre-work and associated quiz each week before you come into the laboratory to do the practical. Not only does the pre-work give you information essential to the experiment, but you also obtain marks towards your final assessment. Note that to be credited with a mark for the pre-work you need to work through the quiz at the end of the lab pre-work text. The pre-work and quizzes may be used for revision at any time and are accessed through USYD eLearning (WebCT).

ChemCAL

A series of computer aided learning modules is available on-line, designed to cover most topics in the First Year Chemistry course. Each module consists of a series of screens containing information, animations and self-help questions. The modules form no part of your assessment and no question responses are recorded. ChemCAL may be accessed via WebCT or our chemistry unit resource page and it provides a useful private study tool. If you are accessing ChemCAL from a home computer you may need to run the ChemCAL set up program to ensure the correct plug-ins are available.

If you have problems using ChemCAL on your Mac, please try these solutions.
